We feel we are selling more than the gold and minerals on beautiful land.
You would be acquiring an experience that will give you a good feel for what the old time prospectors must have felt during the days of the original Montana Gold Rush.
A mining claim is an affordable way to enjoy the beauty of the land combined with the adventure of panning for gold.
Camp on your claim for free or at area National Forest campgrounds.
Located in gold rich Custer County, near the town of Custer and only 37 miles from Mount Rushmore.
Located just NW of the Jewel Cave National Monument and in an area of gold and gem discoveries.
National Forests remained open at all times during the virus with a televised invitation by the Director for families to visit them as safe places for family recreation, making our mining claims some of the safest places for your family to enjoy and get away from all the nonsense.
A lode claim differs from our placer claims, as on a lode claim you can dig into the mountain side and can even go to the extent of building a mine shaft.
Having a lode claim is an advantage as you can dig into the claim with a shaft if you choose.
Our lode claim has veins of valuable minerals including gold in veins (called lodes) cutting thru rocks. Quartz and gold are frequently found together and digging into the quartz vein is called chasing the vein.
A vein of quartz/gold runs thru the claim from West to East.
We also found the gems, Rose Quartz, Feldspar, and Blue-Green Tourmaline.
On the claim I found a quartz vein with gold traces in the rock.
Pick and shovel, rock hammer, metal detector, and is hard rock mining.
I did not expose the whole vein, though was able to follow it going through the claim, intermittently.
Amounts of float (loose sliding rocks) are on the claim.
In lode mining claim prospecting, float refers to loose fragments of rock, ore, or mineral-bearing material that have broken off from a larger, solid bedrock deposit (or "lode") and have been transported downhill.
Finding float is a key first-step clue in prospecting because it indicates that a potentially richer vein of ore exists somewhere uphill from where the fragment was found.
The process of lode, hard rock mining, is the process where gold is extracted directly from the lode vein beneath the ground. Dig down about 3 feet as go through the claim, then pick, shovel, and rock hammer working the sides of that hole. Filling in the holes when leave the claim as required by the national forest.
For the use of any machinery, you need to file a Plan of Operation with the BLM for approval.
Scratch your rock ore against an unglazed white ceramic streak plate.
If it's gold, it will leave a golden streak. Or scratch the surface of the specimen with a knife. Gold is a soft metal that will show scratch marks.

BLACK HILLS GOLD RUSH
After Horatio Ross discovered gold along a creek in the Black Hills in the 1870s, one of the last great gold rushes descended into this area of South Dakota.
The Black Hills Gold Rush took place in Dakota Territory in the United States.
It began in 1874 following the Custer Expedition and reached a peak in 187677.
The first arrivals were a force of 1,000 men led by George Armstrong Custer to investigate reports that the area contained gold, even though the land was owned by the Sioux. This would begin Custers conflicts with Native American Tribes.
In the ensuing decades, people have continued to find pockets of gold in the Black Hills.
The largest and deepest mine in the Western Hemisphere, Homestake Mine netted some 41 million ounces of gold in its 126 years of operation.
SOUTH DAKOTA ROCKHOUNDING
In South Dakota youll be excited to learn that there are some truly amazing rocks and minerals to find. Most of the best rockhounding sites are in and around the Black Hills.
The highlight of South Dakota rockhounding is undoubtedly the highly prized and valuable Fairfield agate, a variety of agate noted for its vibrant colors and distinctive fortification banding. These agates are named after the town of Fairfield around which they are most commonly found, and they are very popular with lapidary artists and collectors.
Gems to be found are Agates, Rose Quartz, Jade, Jasper, Calcity crystals, Amethyst, Tourmaline, and Blue Chalcedony.
One of the biggest reasons rockhounds flock to South Dakota is the wide variety of rocks and minerals that can be found here. Many collectors are interested in the Fairburn agates and rose quartz the state is famous for.
This western part of SOUTH DAKOTA is a rockhound and vacation paradise and has several important gem and mineral deposits in addition to the famous gold deposits of the Black Hills.
JEWEL CAVE NATIONAL MONUMENT
Beneath the Black Hills of South Dakota is the intriguing underground world of Jewel Cave. With over 202 miles of explored passageway, Jewel Cave ranks as one of the longest caves in the world.
Brilliant color and fragile rocks reveal an amazing ecosystem not visible anywhere else. The third longest cave in the world has much to offer to a wide range of those interested in its natural glory.

A portion of the ranch is protected by a Grassland Reserve Program Conservation Easement held by the United States Department of Agriculture's Commodity Credit Corporation. Recreation
On the property, the mix of open meadow and timbered canyon supports big game hunting and wildlife viewing. According to the seller, the habitat supports elk, deer, mountain lion, antelope, and wild turkey, which use the cover and water across the ranch. The combination of forage, winter protection, and reliable water concentrates game and makes the ranch well suited to a private hunting and recreation program alongside its agricultural use.
Wind Cave National Park protects two distinct worlds that couldn't be more different yet are forever connected: a vibrant mixed-grass prairie ecosystem stretching across rolling hills above, and one of theworld's most complex cave systems hidden beneath your feet. Established in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt, Wind Cave became America's eighth national park and the first created specifically to protect a cave. Spanning 33,851 acres of pristine Black Hills landscape, this remarkable park offers visitors a chance to experience the natural wonders of South Dakota from multiple perspectives. Above ground, one of the largest remaining natural mixed-grass prairies in the United States provides habitat for iconic American wildlife including bison, elk, pronghorn, and prairie dogs. Below ground, more than 150 miles of mapped passages (with new sections discovered yearly) create a three-dimensional maze adorned with rare formations found nowhere else on Earth in such abundance.
Agriculture
The open benches and meadow ground across the ranch support hay production and seasonal grazing in the rotation established under the current ownership. The combination of improved pasture, winter protection, and water makes the property adaptable to small-scale cattle, horse, or mixed livestock operations without the capital outlay required to develop agricultural infrastructure from a bare land purchase. Perimeter and division fencing, a corral system, and stock water from wells, springs, and ponds are already in place. The property's agricultural utility is complementary to its recreational program. A buyer can run a modest cattle or horse operation alongside active hunting. The ranch is not presently leased or being grazed by the seller allowing the new owner to fully utilize the ranch..
Buyers seeking specific hay production history, carrying capacity estimates, or grazing rotation data are encouraged to request that information from the seller during the due diligence period.
Water/Mineral Rights & Natural Resources
The ranch has three wells and multiple ponds providing water for domestic use, livestock and wildlife. The well at the main house was drilled in 2015 to a depth of 300 feet. The static water level of this well is 150 feet and produces over 30 gallon of water per minute.
Mineral and subsurface rights currently held by the seller shall be conveyed to a new owner. A mix of ponderosa pine and mixed hardwood stands populate the canyon slopes. Open benches carry native and introduced grasses consistent with the Black Hills transition zone.
General Operations
Burnt Wood Creek Ranch is not presently leased or being grazed by the seller allowing the new owner to fully utilize the ranch.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Western South Dakota Legacy Ranch
Selling at Public Auction - August 26, 2026
There are properties that come to market every year, and then there are properties offered only once in a generation.
This remarkable 1,470-acre legacy ranch represents one of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes in Western South Dakota. Combining towering red rock formations, lush creek-bottom meadows, productive native grasslands, abundant wildlife, and exceptional improvements, this property is destined to become part of someone's family legacy for generations to come.
As you enter the ranch, you are immediately drawn into the property's most captivating feature-a spectacular scenic canyon that winds through the heart of the ranch. Towering 50-foot red rock walls rise above the valley floor, creating an unforgettable backdrop that feels untouched by time. Cottonwood trees sway in the breeze while green meadows stretch across the canyon bottom, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the Old West.
It's easy to imagine a herd of elk emerging from the timber or a mature mule deer stepping quietly into the open grass as the morning sun illuminates the canyon walls.
Water is one of the ranch's greatest assets. Two high-quality water wells provide dependable water for both livestock and wildlife, making this property as practical as it is beautiful.
Nestled within the canyon is a newly constructed horse barn designed with both functionality and Western charm in mind. The lower level provides ample space for multiple horses, while the spacious loft offers abundant storage for hay and straw. Whether you're an equestrian, rancher, or simply appreciate quality improvements, this barn is a perfect complement to the surrounding landscape.
The ranch's eastern and northern portions transition into expansive native grasslands that have supported cattle operations for generations. These highly productive pastures offer exceptional grazing opportunities and are ideal for both seasonal and cow-calf operations. Rich native grasses provide excellent weight gains for livestock while simultaneously creating outstanding habitat for deer, elk, turkey, and numerous upland bird species.
The residence, originally constructed in 1974, features 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, offering comfortable accommodations while overlooking the spectacular ranch landscape. Whether serving as a primary residence, hunting headquarters, or family retreat, the home provides an ideal setting to enjoy everything the property has to offer.
The western portion of the ranch showcases yet another distinct landscape, where rolling terrain, dramatic rock formations, and panoramic views combine to create an extraordinary setting unlike anything else in the region.
From sunrise to sunset, every acre tells a story. Whether your passion is ranching, hunting, horseback riding, conservation, recreation, or simply owning one of South Dakota's truly exceptional properties, this ranch offers possibilities rarely found within a single ownership.
Properties of this caliber are exceptionally rare.
